The Problem
Why most tutoring
underperforms.
Most tutoring fails for a simple reason: it starts with a lesson plan instead of a student. Many tutoring services match on availability rather than fit. Off-the-shelf resources ignore the specific exam board a child is actually sitting. And without a genuine diagnostic, sessions end up re-teaching what a student already knows, or skipping past what they don't.
None of that is usually deliberate - it's just what happens when nobody has time to look properly before teaching starts. Fixing it isn't complicated. It just requires doing the unglamorous work first.
The Method
Real gaps first,
every time.
On the call, we get a flavour for how your child's getting on with maths at the moment, where things feel comfortable, and where the gaps are starting to show. From there we figure out how best to build the fuller picture: sometimes that's a short test, sometimes it happens naturally in the first session, sometimes it's simply reviewing a recent past paper. Whatever fits best for your child.
Once we know where the gaps are, we build a real plan around them. And because nothing sticks after just one pass, we keep revisiting earlier content alongside anything new, so it's genuinely learned, not just covered.
"I'd rather find out what's actually wrong before we start than guess and waste time getting it wrong."
- EdThe Specification
Built around the exam board,
not a curriculum.
AQA, Edexcel and OCR each test differently, reward different working, and structure their papers differently. I teach to the specification a student is actually sitting - using the real papers and mark schemes their exam board sets - rather than a generic maths curriculum adapted after the fact. It's a small distinction on paper, and a large one in the exam hall.
The Standard
Calm, rigorous,
and personally accountable.
I've competed in semi-professional sport for years, and the discipline that demands has shaped how I teach: focused and rigorous, but calm under pressure, even close to an exam. Sessions are demanding but never anxious - students should leave clearer, not more stressed.
I track progress properly and report on it honestly, because a tutor who only tells parents good news isn't being much use to anyone. Every tutor in my network is personally vetted by me, and works from the same proven methods I use myself. Whether I'm teaching your child directly or one of my tutors is, I stay closely involved throughout.
